Actress/singer Zooey Deschanel and crooner M. Ward make for an unlikely pair, but She & Him struck gold by infusing their indie-folk ditties with a vintage pop feel. ∙ Deschanel and Ward first met on the set of her 2007 film, The Go-Getter, when director Martin Hynes asked them to sing a duet for the movie’s end credits. ∙ After years of recording demos at home, Deschanel sent her music to Ward, and She & Him was born when he suggested they work together. ∙ The duo’s debut album, Volume One, arrived in 2008 and the follow-up, 2010’s Volume Two, went all the way to No. 6 on the Billboard 200. ∙ They recorded three songs for the soundtrack of the 2011 film Winnie the Pooh, one of which, “So Long,” earned a Grammy nomination for Best Song Written for Visual Media. ∙ Released in 2011, A Very She & Him Christmas was the second of the duo’s four straight No. 1 LPs on the Billboard Americana/Folk Albums chart. ∙ The pair collaborated with legendary Beach Boys songwriter Brian Wilson on “On the Island,” a track from his 2015 album, No Pier Pressure.
