About The Swell Season
Artist Biography
Every Swell Season song is its own brutally honest lesson on love. The chemistry between Glen Hansard—frontman of Irish rock heroes The Frames—and Czech singer-pianist Markéta Irglová—is palpable, especially on their most heartbreaking melodies. The duo came together in 2006 to craft a low-key debut album of earnest indie folk, and later starred in the 2007 film Once, written and directed by former Frames member John Carney. They also fell in love in the process. In many ways, the film mirrored moments of their lives—a tireless Dublin busker meets an aspiring singer-songwriter, and they make sweet, poignant music together. Many songs from The Swell Season also landed on the soundtrack, including the Oscar-winning “Falling Slowly,” a tender acoustic/piano ballad that shows off Hansard’s powerful wail and Irglová’s understated charm. Even as their real-life romance came to an end, the pair took to the studio to lay bare the heartache for 2009’s soulful, sorrow-soaked Strict Joy, giving themselves—and fans—some satisfying closure.
