Artist Biography
A highly influential but little-known entrant in Brit-punk’s Class of ’77, the Homosexuals began as the Rejects, opening for the likes of the Adverts, X-Ray Spex, and the Damned in London’s early punk rock scene. Finding distaste with the growing commercialism of the punk movement, the group renamed themselves the Homosexuals, rehearsing in squats and making occasional lo-fi recordings on borrowed studio time from friends. Influenced by afro-beat, reggae, and the experimental rock leanings of groups like This Heat, the group’s jagged guitar lines and tense, discordant melodies presaged much of the music that came to be classified as post-punk. Releasing only two LPs and a handful of singles between 1978 and 1984, the band’s obscurity and relatively unpalatable name relegated them to cult status in coming years. ASTRAL GLAMOUR, a three-disc compilation of their entire oeuvre, was released in 2004, and a vinyl 10-inch, LOVE GUNS, their first new recording in 25 years, appeared in 2008.
