With a sound that has traversed dynamic folk-pop, earthy rock, and atmospheric Americana, the music of Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Amilia K Spicer evokes both a spirit of travel and a sense of place. A native of Pennsylvania, Spicer began playing piano at a young age, though it was a career as a film director that initially drew her west to California. By the mid-'90s, however, the pull toward music took hold and she began establishing herself on the L.A. club scene. Spicer's momentum picked up after landing a mainstage slot at the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas, and she released her debut album, Like an Engine, in 2000. Over the next several years, she toured tirelessly in both the U.S. and Europe, releasing her second album, Seamless, in 2002 and landing tracks on prominent television shows like Dawson's Creek and Party of Five. Musically, Spicer's sound incorporated a distinctive mixture of introspective piano pop and '70s singer/songwriter with an increasing trend toward dusty Americana, including pedal steel and acoustic guitar accompanying her smoky voice.
In the coming decade and a half, her wanderlust carried her around the world, living part time in Austin and Los Angeles, contributing tracks to tribute compilations for both Neil Young and Peter Case, and working as a session vocalist and arranger. Eventually, a group of well-honed, poetic songs came together and Spicer began work on her long-awaited third album, playing not only piano but guitar, banjo, and various other instruments. Working with a crack band of veteran session musicians including pedal steel player Eric Heywood (Son Volt), guitarist Gurf Morlix (Lucinda Williams), and bassist Daryl Johnson (Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones), she recorded 2017's Wow & Flutter, her most rustic and organically inclined release to date. ~ Timothy Monger
