Artist Biography
With their old-school flair, pristine harmonies, and sexy, self-assured attitude, En Vogue were among the most popular R&B groups of the ’90s.
• The original quartet was formed in 1989 by the Oakland-based production duo Foster & McElroy, who envisioned a girl group that would evoke the heyday of Motown.
• With their 1989 debut single, “Hold On,” En Vogue notched their first of six No. 1 hits on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The song also crossed over to No. 2 on the Hot 100.
• En Vogue’s blockbuster 1992 album Funky Divas yielded three Top 10 hits and earned four Grammy nominations, including Best Rock Performance By a Duo Or Group for the guitar-driven single “Free Your Mind.”
• In 1993, En Vogue teamed up with Salt-N-Pepa for a cover of Linda Lyndell’s 1968 soul gem “Whatta Man.” The remake reached No. 3 on the Hot 100 and earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group.
• En Vogue returned in 2018 with their seventh album, Electric Café, their first project in 14 years.
