Lennon Stella: Influences
Indie rock and future soul lead her far from Nashville.
Artist Biography
Lennon Stella may have gotten famous playing a country singer on TV, but she has designs on being a pop star in real life. The daughter of country musicians Marylynne and Brad Stella, Lennon was born in 1999 and spent her childhood in the Toronto suburb of Oshawa before her parents relocated the family to Nashville in 2009. A few years later, Lennon and her younger sibling Maisy landed the roles of singing sisters Maddie and Daphne Conrad on the ABC drama Nashville, while laying the foundation for their own musical career through viral covers of Robyn’s “Call Your Girlfriend” and Charli XCX’s “Boom Clap” that showcased both their DIY ingenuity and ability to transform pop jams into harmony-rich, folksy serenades. But since Nashville went off the air in 2018, Lennon has been eager to distance herself from Music Row tradition, whether she’s trading suggestive lines with One Direction’s Liam Payne over Jonas Blue’s tropical club beats on 2018’s joint single “Polaroid” or serving as the mysterious muse to EDM icons The Chainsmokers and Illenium on the 2019 smash “Takeaway.” At the same time, she’s gone a long way to prove she’s grown up since playing the wholesome TV teen, offering candid insights into messy breakups and open relationships amid the synth-shimmered R&B of her 2020 full-length debut, Three. Two. One. “With an album, you can really get to know someone,” Lennon told Apple Music. “I feel like you can understand me so much through this.”
