Artist Biography
Scott Colley is a jazz bassist, composer, and bandleader. He's a first-call sideman and has played in several all-star projects including Still Dreaming with Joshua Redman, Ron Miles, and Brian Blade, and Steel House with Edward Simon and Blade. Colley's playing is welcoming and intuitive, even when experimental, and he has an organic approach to harmony and a kaleidoscopic view of improvisation. 1998's Subliminal appeared from Criss Cross. His long tenure in Chris Potter's group netted adventurous albums including 2002's Traveling Mercies and 2007's Song for Anyone. Colley's Architect of the Silent Moment, issued by CAM Jazz in 2007, is a 21st century jazz classic. 2017's Seven made numerous year-end lists. In the 2010s, Colley worked extensively with guitarists Julian Lage, Nels Cline, and Wolfgang Muthspiel, whose trio he joined in 2020, appearing on that year's Angular Blues and 2023's Dance of the Elders.
