Kid Koala: Influences
About Kid Koala
Artist Biography
A playful figurehead of turntablism, Eric San has steadily evolved from a fast-scratching live DJ to a genre-pushing producer, composer, and collaborator as Kid Koala. Born in Vancouver in 1974, San cut his teeth with demos layering rapid, far-flung samples before releasing his all-analog debut, 2000’s Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Within a year, he had worked alongside producer Dan the Automator on the influential first albums from both Deltron 3030 and Gorillaz, establishing himself as an expressive contributor to millennial hip-hop. San has gone on to remix everyone from Jack Johnson to jazz legend Yusef Lateef, while delving into rock with former members of Wolfmother as The Slew. His 2012 album 12 Bit Blues, meanwhile, recombined early blues recordings into new feats of tempo and texture. Now based in Montreal, San has branched out into creating graphic novels and scoring films, theatre, and video games.
