Artist Biography
Trained as a classical violinist, Shoji Tabuchi was inspired to pursue bluegrass music after seeing Roy Acuff in concert. At the age of 18 he formed his own band, the Bluegrass Ramblers, to great success in his native Japan. In 1967, with a few hundred dollars and his violin, he moved to San Francisco. Playing for audiences around the country, Tabuchi built a following, and if many came out of curiosity, a substantial percentage were mightily impressed by his technical skill and his infectious enthusiasm. His brashest move came when he raised the money for the Shoji Tabuchi Theater, in Branson, Missouri, and by the early 2000s, Tabuchi’s show was a must-see on the list of visitors to country music’s second capital. Shoji Tabuchi died on August 11, 2023; he was 79.
