Artist Biography
Starting with the clever ripostes of 2011’s he-said/she-said earworm “Awkward,” Western Australia trio San Cisco established a knack for percolating indie pop that’s streamlined and spritely as a rule. (Observe their sun-baked 2013 take on Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky.”) Between Jordi Davieson’s coolly conversational drawl and Scarlett Stevens’ syncopated drumming, their songs provide a playful backdrop for Johnny Marr-style jangle and gleaming funk licks, with bubbly bass lines and chirping keyboards never far behind. The band enlisted a rare guest star for 2014’s “Jealousy” in The Preatures’ Isabella Manfredi, whose dryly smoky vocals circled back to Stevens’ role on “Awkward,” but otherwise their approach has remained blissfully consistent. Even when San Cisco slow down for more torchy ballads (see “Skin”) on 2020’s Between You and Me, their sound remains as clean and elastic as on their anthems.
