One of the leading violists of his generation, Mat Maneri is a soloist and composer, known for his forward-thinking approach to modern jazz, free improvisation, and avant-garde music. Maneri attracted attention while playing alongside his father, saxophonist Joe Maneri. Since then, he's worked with artists including Matthew Shipp, Joe Morris, Ivo Perelman, and John Surman, among others. As a leader, he has issued small-group albums like 1999's So What, 2000's Blue Decco, and 2003's For Consequence. He has also collaborated on numerous projects including 2017's Sounding Tears with Lucian Ban and Evan Parker. Maneri's quartet released Dust in 2019. With Ban and Surman he released Transylvanian Folk Songs in 2020. He worked alongside Gordon Grdina on 2023's Unshaped Words. In 2024, Transylvanian Dances -- a duo with Ban -- appeared. The following year the trio released Cantica Profana and The Athenaeum Concert.
