About Julie Christensen
In the artist’s words:
Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail.
I must've been maybe four years old the first time I heard Judy Garland sing Over the Rainbow, in The Wizard of Oz, on our black and white TV. I don’t remember ever not singing. I sang as I walked, and did a lot of walking
What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular?
Joni Mitchell, For the Roses
Miles Davis, Kind of Blue
The Band, Cahoots
I go to all 3 of these albums for their uninhibited creative power. Each of the artists involved roared past the limits of the trends in popular music at the time. They help me to remember that limiting myself to a genre is not necessary.
Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song.
“The Cardinal”
I write many sad songs, so on my porch in Nashville I started a happier one. I listened to cardinals sing. It went dark on me! It’s fictional but my high school mascot WAS a Cardinal, and details were informed by experiences from my young adulthood.
What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far?
I sang the "Joan of Arc” duet often with Leonard Cohen in 1988 and 1993. In Hal Willner’s “Came So Far for Beauty” in Dublin in 2006, I sang it in a wild new way, with Lou Reed. I wish there was a recording; some of the best moments are in the ether.
