Jah Prayzah's Popular Music Videos
Artist Biography
Distinguished by his signature military regalia (though he never served), singer/songwriter/bandleader Jah Prayzah is a Zimbabwean star whose influence extends beyond his homeland's borders. Born Mukudzeyi Mukombe in Uzumba-Maramba-Pfungwe in 1987, he took his stage name from Mukudzeyi, which means "praise him" in the Shona tongue. (Fans call him "Musoja," the Shona word for soldier.) He launched his career in 2007 with Rudo Nerunyararo, blending guitar-driven pop with reggae, Zimdancehall, and traditional Shona instrumentation, particularly the mbira. During the 2010s, he released albums with his band, Third Generation, and began exploring Afropop forms outside Zimbabwe, including "Watora Mari," an ultra-popular 2016 collaboration with Tanzanian star Diamond Platnumz, and "My Lilly," with Afrobeats icon Davido. Two singles released around the same time—“Mdhara Vachauya” and “Kutonga Kwaro”—were used by both the military and the opposition during the final years of President Robert Mugabe’s rule.
