Dedicated to expanding the overlooked potential of the woodwind family of instruments, Ned Rothenberg played various members of the saxophone family, together with bass clarinet and flute (both the orthodox type and the lesser known shakuhachi, a Japanese bamboo instrument). Since the mid 1980s, he has established a worldwide audience through his solo concerts. Additionally, he leads the groups Double Band and Power Lines and is co-founder of New Winds, a co-operative group with flautist Robert Dick and trumpeter Herb Robertson. He has worked with dozens of musicians, including Anthony Braxton, Don Cherry, Fred Frith, alto saxophonist Kang Tae Hwan, Arto Lindsay, Evan Parker, Marc Ribot, and John Zorn. Rothenberg also leads Sync, with guitarist/bass player Jerome Harris and tabla player Samir Chatterjee.
