Artist Biography
In the early 2000s, alternative-metal band CKY rose to mainstream prominence thanks in part to appearances on the TV show Jackass. Although the Pennsylvania band had a connection to the series—drummer Jess Margera is the older brother of cast member Bam Margera—they also made the kind of music that fit the show’s aggressive vibe: Their 1999 debut single, “96 Quite Bitter Beings,” for example, boasted gouging metal grooves and pulverizing riffs. Jess and his high school friend Deron Miller initially played music together in the ’90s before forming CKY (who were originally called Camp Kill Yourself before shortening their name) near the end of the decade with guitarist Chad I Ginsburg. The band’s full-length debut, Volume 1, led to a Vans Warped Tour slot and a major-label record deal for 2002’s Infiltrate-Destroy-Rebuild. Despite lineup shifts that saw Miller depart, CKY have remained a ferocious live band—as heard on 2021’s live holiday special, fuCKYou2020—and they’ve continued to churn out a heady mix of stoner rock, prog, skate punk, and throwback heavy metal.
