Swedish group Flowers Must Die's name is inspired by a song from the German Krautrock group Ash Ra Tempel, and they inhabit a similar musical landscape. Nevertheless, while the Amon Duul II and Hawkwind influences are certainly apparent in their records, their take on progressive and psychedelic rock is also fundamentally contemporary, as illustrated by their 2017 album Kompost. The group was founded in Linkoping, Sweden in 2006 while the members were at art school. Rickard Daun, Martin Daun, Lisa Ekelund, Jonas Höglund, and Sven Walan came from various musical backgrounds and possessed diverse passions including hard rock, jazz, soul, disco, and blues. The band's self-titled debut EP was released in 2010 and a series of albums followed, but it was 2017 that marked a real turning point for the group. They enlisted new member Lisa Ekelund on vocals and Theremin (bringing the age range of the band members from 28 to 63) and signed to British independent label Rocket Recordings. The group released Kompost later that year, which expanded upon the cosmic disco and experimental psychedelia of their previous efforts. Flowers Must Die returned just a year later with their fifth record, Där Blommor Dör. ~ Bekki Bemrose
