About Kali Malone
Kali Malone is an American composer and organist based in Stockholm. Her post-minimalist pieces, which make use of specific tuning systems, include works for choirs and chamber ensembles as well as acoustic and electronic instruments. She is best known for her pipe organ compositions, including the acclaimed 2019 release The Sacrificial Code. She has also produced electroacoustic drone releases such as Living Torch (2022), and has additionally participated in projects ranging from noise to shoegaze. She collaborated with Stephen O’Malley and Lucy Railton for Does Spring Hide Its Joy (2023).
Born in 1994 in Denver, Colorado, Malone grew up studying classical vocal music while also being involved with experimental music scenes. She moved to Sweden at 18, and through Elektronmusikstudion gained access to state-funded studios equipped with historical Buchla synthesizers and tape machines.
From 2014 to 2019, Malone worked as a sound engineer at the artist-run experimental music venue Fylkingen, while also studying electroacoustic composition at Stockholm’s Royal College of Music and interning as a pipe organ tuner. This experience profoundly shaped her musical development and deepened her interest in organ composition, historical temperaments and just intonation. She started adapting her electroacoustic compositional approach to the pipe organ, making recordings which began circulating within experimental music communities. She has since performed her music in more than 80 churches and concert halls throughout Europe and North America.
