The unquiet spirit of Myspace circa 2006 returned in the 2020s as a nonbinary electro-pop musician bent on “destroying gender norms.” This is 6arelyhuman, a producer and vocalist with a passion for black lipstick and extreme side-swept bangs. Born in 2001, the Gen Z Fort Worth native raids millennial youth culture for inspiration, resulting in delirious irreverence. A crunk energy seeps through everything, warping the beats drawn from electroclash and 2000s club sounds, with rapped/sung lyrics that split the difference between black-eyeliner emo and Dirty South. Everything melts into a sticky-sweet mess that eschews nostalgia in favor of chaos. Internet Famous, 6arelyhuman’s 2024 follow-up to 2023’s Sassy Scene, is littered with references to the aughts—flip phones and Jersey Shore—and includes a cover of Far East Movement’s 2010 banger “Like A G6,” but the star is the heavy, hard production, which lends itself to the atmosphere of a manic rave.
