Indie rock outfit Alien Boy combine a riffy pop punk sensibility with shimmery shoegaze textures and moody, self-conscious outsider perspectives. With its origins rooted in the Portland, Oregon, D.I.Y. scene, their first album, Sleeping Lessons, appeared in 2018. They upped the production quality and solidified their sound without curtailing dissonance or angst on releases like 2021's Don't Know What I Am and 2025's breakup-inspired You Wanna Fade?
Formed in 2015 by vocalist/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Sonia Weber, guitarist Caleb Misclevitz, and drummer Derek McNeil, and named after the Wipers song, Alien Boy delivered the raw Never Getting Over It EP in April of that year. Its eight lo-fi noise tracks included a cover of the Smiths' "Hand in Glove." They added Mac Pogue on bass for the Stay Alive EP, which the band self-released in October 2016. With their reputation for raucous live shows on the rise, they signed with the Tiny Engines label for release of their full-length debut, August 2018's Sleeping Lessons. Recorded by Nich Wilbur (Gun Outfit, Chastity Belt), it somewhat refined their still clamorous sound.
Alien Boy eventually returned to the studio with Wilbur, who engineered and co-produced August 2021's Don't Know What I Am, their first album to credit producers (the band also co-produced). Their third album and Get Better Records debut, it was mixed by Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Joyce Manor) and featured the original trio and bassist Elian Conroy. Conroy was out and third guitarist A.P. Fiedler was in for the group's Get Better Records follow-up, You Wanna Fade? Released in May 2025, it grappled with heartbreak and the disorientation of major change. ~ Marcy Donelson
