Singer-songwriter and producer Amaarae—Ama Serwah Genfi—was born in The Bronx in 1994, and raised in Ghana, Atlanta, and New Jersey. She went to college in Atlanta, immersing herself in the city’s cultural flavors until she graduated in 2017, at which point she returned to Ghana. That year, she released her debut EP, Passionfruit Summers, a textured, colorful preview of her future works through it all, even her third-full-length, 2025’s BLACK STAR. In 2020, Amaarae dropped her breakthrough album, THE ANGEL YOU DON’T KNOW, highlighted by the viral hit “SAD GIRLZ LUV MONEY,” which featured fellow Ghanaian artist MOLIY, with Colombian-American singer Kali Uchis on its remix. Amaarae’s 2023 follow-up, Fountain Baby, saw the artist further exploring varied subgenres. Often offered a chance to add her own flavor to other artist’s music—she’s jumped on tracks with Janelle Monáe, Childish Gambino, Babyface, Tiwa Savage, and more. Pushing boundaries while centering her roots, Amaarae’s artful genre-blending comes into full-focus throughout her daring catalog.
