Artist Biography
Marraige to a New Orleans jazz musician whose nickname was "Slow Drag" may have been enough to inspire Annie Pavageau to become a sacred singer; listeners interested in experiencing the results of this conversion don't have a whole lot to work with, only a scant five recordings by this singer and pianist made between 1961 and 1974. Her husband was Alcide "Slow Drag" Pavageau, a performer whose long career in the Big Easy included playing guitar in a band called The Undertakers as far back as 1915, eventually establishing a reputation as a marvelous dancer and finally evolving into one of the great bassists in classic jazz.
In contrast, Annie Pavageau's recording career did not even begin until the final decade of her husband's life. The keynote entry in her discography is the 1970 Soutland album released under the group name of Annie Pavageau and the Morning Star Choir. "Any kind of music make you feel good--blues or church music," she commented simply and succintly in an interview. "It's the sincereness of it--that's what make you feel good." Her fine singing style is also featured on several numbers, including "In the Sweet Bye and Bye", on an album by bandleader Jim Robinson, the slow drag of her hubbie holding steady in the rhythm section. ~ Eugene Chadbourne
