Luke Vibert’s beloved song “I Love Acid” serves as the cornerstone of his 2003 album, YosepH. But despite the prevalence of the Roland TB-303 across the UK producer’s sprawling catalog, there’s more to his work than retro-fetishism. Born in Cornwall in 1973, Vibert played in a variety of bands as a teen, then found his way to electronic music through hip-hop, like so many of his contemporaries in the late ‘80s. By the early ‘90s, he was tackling multiple styles under a variety of aliases: trip-hop as Wagon Christ, drill ‘n’ bass as Plug, and experimental techno as part of the duo Vibert/Simmonds, for Aphex Twin’s Rephlex label; later came his leftfield disco project, Kerrier District. Under his own name, meanwhile, Vibert’s discography doubles as an ongoing tribute to classic electronic sounds delivered with a characteristic wink. A given release might tackle face-melting jungle (2020’s Luke Vibert Presents Amen Andrews), experimental techno (2015’s Bizarster), or even library music (2013’s Luke Vibert’s Nuggets 3), but what links it all is his indefatigable spirit of exploration and self-evident good cheer.
