Baaba Maal is a world-renowned singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Senegal. His ever-evolving music melds traditional African rhythms, melodies, and instrumentation with contemporary Western genres and production. 1989's Djam Leelii, with mentor, guitarist/vocalist Mansour Seck, received global critical attention. 1990's Taara offered Maal's diverse approach to Afropop, and 1994's Grammy-nominated Firin' in Fouta crossed modern Afropop with cumbia, hip-hop, funk, ragga, and EDM culture. Brian Eno and Howie B were both collaborators on 1998's Nomad Soul. 2001's stripped-down Missing You (Mi Yeewnii) explored Fulani folk styles. 2009's Television was a collaboration with Brazilian Girls, and 2016's wildly diverse The Traveller (sic) targeted everyone but African-music purists. Maal co-wrote "Wakanda," the theme song from Black Panther. In 2023, he returned with Being. Recording in Brooklyn, London, and Senegal, his core band, comprising younger players and producers including the Very Best, worked alongside him.
