Tomas Squip was one of Washington D.C. hardcore’s most memorable characters, so it’s no surprise that the band he formed in the fertile soil provided by Dischord Records was also unique. Beefeater only existed for two years, between the years 1984-1986, but their two albums and chaotic live presence are an important part of the D.C. punk rock story. Squip and the band were heavily invested in the politics of the scene, participating in “punk percussion” protests and other initiatives, and exploring political concerns in their lyrics. Like kindred spirits the Minutemen, Beefeater also incorporated jazz and funk into their restless punk stew.
