Enigmatic musician and producer Don Was came of age during Detroit’s tumultuous, yet musically fruitful period of the late 1960s/early ’70s, before founding the genre-hopping band Was (Not Was) in the early 1980s. The 1981 single “Out Come The Freaks” established Was (Not Was) as a free-thinking dance ensemble capable of rocking a groove. Their breakthrough, however, came several years later with the transatlantic smash “Walk The Dinosaur.” When not writing and recording with his group, Was worked as a producer for some of the biggest names in rock and pop, including k.d. lang, Willie Nelson, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, and the Rolling Stones. He’s won numerous Grammys through the years, including producer of the year in 1995. He reconvened Was (Not Was) in the early 2000s and released the album BOO!
