Benjamin Smith is a Toronto-based soloist, chamber musician, and pedagogue regarded for his technique and expressive interpretations. Trained across several of North America's leading institutions, he has built a career as a soloist and chamber musician across Canada, also appearing in the United States and Mexico. In 2025, he appeared on the Orchid Classics recordings Vortex by Arie Cohen Mann and Arirang by Daniel Hamin Go.
After studying with Andrea Battista, James Anagnoson, and Christina Dahl, Smith earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Toronto and continued to the Glenn Gould School, where he completed an Artist Diploma. He later received a master's degree from the Juilliard School and went on to complete a doctorate at Stony Brook University. As a soloist, he established himself through success in competitions, becoming a laureate of events including the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition and the CMC Stepping Stone Competition. His concerto appearances have included performances with the Stony Brook Symphony Orchestra, the New Juilliard Ensemble, and the Ontario Philharmonic, often featuring less frequently performed repertoire such as the piano concertos of Schoenberg and Schnittke. Chamber music has remained an important part of his artistic work. His performances have been broadcast nationally on CBC Music as well as on the BBC, and he has collaborated with ensembles including the Penderecki, Cecilia, and Annex string quartets. After spending two seasons as a member of the Israelievitch-Smith-Ahn Piano Trio, he joined the Andromeda Trio and became a regular participant at festivals such as Toronto Summer Music and Festival del Lago in Mexico. Alongside his performing activities, he has developed an extensive teaching career. He joined the faculties of the Glenn Gould School and the Taylor Young Artist Academy at the Royal Conservatory of Music, following an earlier appointment on the piano faculty at Western University. His work as an adjudicator has also become an important part of his professional life, with jury invitations from major Canadian music festivals and the OPUS competition in the United States. ~ Prince Iwundu
