Blitzen Trapper trade in sepia-toned, groove-heavy Americana, shifting between folk, country, and Southern rock. After forming in 2000 in Portland, OR, the band independently released their first three records, including 2007’s Wild Mountain Nation, an eclectic roots record inspired heavily by ‘70s country rock (the title track), punk (“Miss Spiritual Tramp”), and psych (“Sci-Fi Kid”). The album’s critical success led to a deal with Sub Pop, which released the equally lauded Furr (2008), on which Blitzen Trapper honed their woodsy sound on songs like the title track, a mythic tale about a boy raised by wolves. Their vision is steady, even as the band have indulged in prog (2010’s “Destroyer of the Void”), copious riffs (2015's “All Across This Land”), and a dystopian rock opera (2017’s Wild and Reckless). They grew calmer with 2020’s thoughtful, low-key Holy Smokes Future Jokes and songs like the reflective “Magical Thinking.”
Members of Blitzen Trapper include, or have included, Eric Earley.
