Artist Biography
Boonlorm is one of a few monikers belonging to Brooklyn-based DJ/producer/electronic artist Skooby Laposky. Laposky began getting involved in music as a teenager in Iowa working as a party promoter. These parties led him to work with '70s disco/deep house maven DJ Wolf and later on with Detroit techno legend Theo Parrish. Laposky worked mostly under the name Pocketknife, doing remixes for artists as wide-ranging as Lykke Li, Paul Weller, and Adele, as well as issuing his own sounds on a series of limited-run 12"s. Boonlorm cropped up in 2012 as an extension of the work Laposky was doing as Pocketknife. Still rooted firmly in house traditions, the sounds for Boonlorm tracks were sourced almost completely from recordings of prepared piano and programmed with raw, unfiltered electronic drums, nodding at once to both the minimal approach of early Chicago house and the experimental leanings of avant-garde heroes like John Cage. A full-length album entitled String Figures saw release in early 2014. ~ Fred Thomas
