Brian Lock
About Brian Lock
b. 1967, Hampshire, England. Lock studied music at Cambridge University, with Alexander Goehr, and then at the Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw with Henryk Górecki and Witold Lutoslawski. His studies in Poland led to an ongoing relationship that has resulted in scores for Polish films and stage productions in addition to his extensive composing credits for films and television in the UK and USA. Lock’s compositions combine rich orchestral writing with an acute awareness of the possibilities of latter-day developments in stylistic and technological developments. His music can be heard on the soundtracks of films such as Magneto (1993), Lagodna (1995), Foreign Moon (1995), The Portrait Of A Lady (1996), The Gambler (1997), The Land Girls (1998), and Vipère Au Poing (2004). Lock has released soundtrack albums of several of the foregoing films. His television themes have graced shows in the UK and the USA, including the BBC’s Coast and Panorama, CBS’s 60 Minutes and The Oprah Winfrey Show. Lock’s music was also used for the Polish stage production, Angels In America. He has orchestrated music used by the BBC for coverage of the Olympic Games and presentations at London’s Millennium Dome, and he has composed commercials for Hewlett Packard, Coca-Cola and others.
For performances of his experimental work, Lock has formed his own ensembles. In London in 2007, he performed works such as ‘Three Songs For A New Europe’, ‘Concerto For The Sound Of A Harp And Other Sounds’, with harpist Hugh Webb, ‘Concerto For Clarinet, Percussion, Birds And Computers’, with clarinettist Neyire Ashworth, ‘Sonata For Cello And Mixing Desk’, with cellist Zoë Martlew, ‘Variations On Ideas By Ligeti, Varese, Frank Zappa, Glenn Gould And Others’, ‘Sonata For Flute And Piano’, with flautist Susan Miller and pianist Andrew Ball, and ‘Concerto For Clarinet, Microphone, Camera, Two Computers And Small Ensemble’. In addition to his composing and performing, Lock is engaged in music and technological research at the University of London, where he is also a Senior Lecturer in digital music technology and composition. He has given guest lectures at the National Film & Television School, the Edinburgh International Film Festival and the Royal College of Music.
