About Cagework
Artist Biography
The raucous, crunchy but lo-fi indie rock of Brixton trio Cagework first made its impression with the release of the 2019 single "Wilson."
Originally a solo project for former American Enthusiasm and Selfish Son member Sam Bedford after he finished university, Bedford decided to bring in James Luxton and Russell Marshall to flesh out his material. Taking inspiration from the lo-fi-sounding indie rock of groups like Sebadoh and Pavement, as well as the emotional punk rock of bands such as Hüsker Dü, the trio were quickly picked up by Justin Lockey (Mastersystem, Minor Victories) to record and release on his own Physical Education Records. Their eponymous debut, Cagework, appeared in 2019, with the seven tracks blasting through a mix of indie rock, lo-fi, and early emo in just 16 minutes. For their second record, the band began moving away from their emo roots, instead leaning into Americana, but this didn't stop them from keeping their brief song structures, moving the run-time for 2020's Exercise in Conflict up to 28 minutes. ~ Rich Wilson
