Born

Genre
R&B/Soul
R&B singer Carl Thomas emerged at the turn of the millennium as one of the most distinctive voices on the Bad Boy Records roster, bringing a gritty, soul-deep authenticity to a label best known as a charging presence in hip-hop. Discovered by Sean “Puffy” Combs after cutting his teeth on background vocal work, Thomas arrived with a sound rooted in classic soul phrasing rather than the sleeker, hip-hop-inflected R&B dominating radio at the time. His 2000 debut Emotional remains the defining statement of his career, a platinum-certified album anchored by “I Wish,” a club-friendly ballad that became a genre touchstone, crossing over into pop radio and, maybe just as notoriously, earning him a shout-out on JAŸ-Z’s “I Just Wanna Love U.”
