There’s a clue to the Filipino indie rock band’s secret sauce in the pizza-box design of their first self-titled LP—a recipe of indulgences and vices, baked-in fantasies and fears, topped with potent, surrealist rhymes. Cheats formed in 2013, a group of self-described rock geeks and couch potatoes who shared a love of videogames and indie anthems. Their propulsive, guitar-driven tunes provide a vehicle for the twin female harmonies of Candy Gamos and Saab Magalona (daughter of rap icon Francis M), making for a riotous feast that’s landed them on the bill at international festivals.
