Chicane made trance history with “Offshore,” a dreamy 1996 single that became a staple of dance floors and chill-out rooms alike. Since then, the UK producer—born Nicholas Bracegirdle in Buckinghamshire in 1971—has remained a fixture in dance music, renowned for his characteristic fusions of driving beats, dreamy melodies, and Balearic atmospheres. Following his debut album, 1997’s Far from the Maddening Crowds, Chicane landed an even more enduring hit with 1999’s “Saltwater,” folding the vocals of Clannad’s Máire Brennan into a propulsive progressive-house anthem. He went on to veil Bryan Adams’ voice in Auto-Tune on 2000’s “Don’t Give Up,” a silky stormer that confirmed Bracegirdle’s melodic instincts. Over the years, Chicane has proved his versatility—reworking Sigur Rós on 2009’s “Poppiholla” and collaborating with Owl City’s Adam Young on 2010’s “Middledistancerunner”—without losing sight of the immersive, uplifting qualities that his fans find so entrancing.
