Genre
R&B/Soul
Chicago-based singer Chuck Bernard spent most of the early and mid-'60s signed to Satellite Records or its parent St. Lawrence label, where he released a handful of singles starting in 1965. Despite working numerous clubs in the Windy City and "One Wasted" b/w "Let's Go Get Stoned" getting some notice, he had little to show for his work, and a shift in 1967 to Zodiac Records proved fortuitous -- the five records he released through them sold better, though not well enough to break him nationally. Finally, in 1970, a single of "Contract Your Love" b/w "A Shoulder to Lean On," on Brunswick no less, made the R&B charts, but it was to prove an ending rather than a new beginning for Bernard. So far as is known, he never released another record. The best surviving example of his style and sound, apart from any reissued or anthologized singles, consists of his appearance on show number 18 of the 1966-vintage television soul showcase The !!!! Beat. ~ Bruce Eder
