About Deidre McCalla
In the artist’s words:
Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail.
An early musical memory is from a school production of “Mame.” At a moment in my solo song there was no distinction between me, the stage, or the audience. I discovered the purity of performance; I have repeatedly reached for that ecstasy ever since.
What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular?
Bonnie Raitt, Nick of Time
Cris Williamson, The Changer and the Changed
Paul Simon, Graceland
Williamson’s The Changer and the Changed was a ground breaker for Women’s Music. I worn out two copies. I love how on Graceland Simon fused his tight songwriting with multiple musical genres. With Nick of Time my fav Ms. Raitt finally hit a home run.
Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song.
“Walk Me Down to the River”
I wrote “Walk Me Down to the River” to honor my mother’s passing. I love how it is both somber and celebratory. A number of lines are words she spoke to me in her final days. It is my most played song on Apple Music.
What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far?
Most memorable music moment: in 1993 I was the first Mainstage performer for the March on Washington for LGB Equal Rights. I sang the opening acapella and my voice echoed across the National Mall as the first of the marchers entered the rally area.
Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band?
I think the ultimate get for any songwriter is to have an artist you respect and admire make a successful cover of your song. Maybe someday!
