When Miss Kittin & The Hacker unleashed 1998’s “Frank Sinatra” and “1982”—a pair of cold, calculated dance tracks oozing with sex, punk, and irony—electroclash was effectively born. The voice behind the songs, Caroline Hervé (born in Grenoble, France, in 1973) grew up on ‘80s pop, New Wave, funk, and disco, eventually falling into the rave scene in the early ‘90s before stepping behind the decks as Miss Kittin. By the turn of the century, she was on a hot streak, crafting brash, bumping club hits with French producer The Hacker, Swiss artist Golden Boy, and Chicago DJ Felix da Housecat. As a solo artist, she’s found more freedom to experiment, slipping in hints of Chicago house and Detroit techno on 2004’s I Com and 2008’s BatBox, and stretching her electro-pop ambitions over 2013’s double album Calling From the Stars and 2018’s moody conceptual collection Cosmos. Over the years, she’s remained an in-demand collaborator, too, and—with releases like 2022’s Third Album with The Hacker, and David Guetta’s reworking of her 2001 track with Felix da Housecat, “Silver Screen (Shower Scene)”—continues to prove that electroclash will never die.
