Bebel Gilberto was born in 1966 when her Brazilian parents, bossa nova pioneer João Gilberto and singer Miúcha, were living in New York, but spent much of her life accompanying her father as he recorded around the globe. Settling in the city of her birth, she released her first record in 1986 and appeared on some compilations and as a guest singer over the next decade, but her breakthrough came with her 2000 album Tanto Tempo, a smash hit that heralded a new electronica take on bossa nova. Many of the songs were covers of Brazilian classics, but Suba’s chill production and Gilberto’s sultry vocals introduced them to a new generation. While mourning the death of her parents, Gilberto was inspired to make music again by producer Thomas Bartlett, recording 2020’s Agora. She told Apple Music, "I wasn't even thinking about music, but Thomas invited me into the studio and showed me 'Cliché.' I fell in love. It came out right away."
