Artist Biography
Japanese singer-songwriter Eikichi Yazawa began recording in 1972 as lead singer for the popular rockabilly band Carol, before going solo three years later.
∙ Not only was he the first solo Japanese rock artist to perform at Tokyo’s legendary Nippon Budokan arena, but he also holds the venue’s record for most performances—more than 100.
∙ As Yazawa’s album, Gold Rush, hit No. 1, his 1978 concert at the Korakuen baseball stadium (now the Tokyo Dome) was Japan’s largest-ever rock event at the time.
∙ He headlined the country’s largest and most prestigious music festival at 2006’s Rock in Japan.
∙ After establishing Garuru Records in 2008, he released the album Rock ’n’ Roll, which debuted at No. 3 on the Japanese charts the following year.
∙ He holds the record for the most Top 10 entries on the Japanese Oricon Albums chart, with 46.
