Ensemble Pearl is a collective featuring Stephen O'Malley (Sunn 0)))), Atsuo (Boris), Michio Kurihara (Ghost), and William Herzog (Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter and Citizen's Utilities). Rather than the post-rock, 21st century psych and doom metal genres the group members are associated with individually, Ensemble Pearl's sound is closer in aesthetic to post-Hex Earth's. There are elements of everything from the earliest Tangerine Dream records, Harold Budd, Locrian's droning post-metal, and early instrumental rock sounds (à la Link Wray) that make them virtually impossible to classify. The band's self-titled debut album was released by Drag City in 2013. ~ Thom Jurek
