Since emerging on the avant-jazz and new music scenes, Joe McPhee has been a diverse, and deeply emotional composer who has continually revealed that emotional content and theoretical underpinnings are thoroughly compatible. 1970's release Black Magic Man was Hat Hut's first title. 1971's oft-reissued classic Nation Time wove spiritual jazz with soulful R&B. In a span of more than 50 years, McPhee joined dozens of luminaries including Jimmy Giuffre and Andre Jaume (River Station, 1993), Ken Vandermark (A Meeting in Chicago, 1997), and Peter Brötzmann (Guts, 2013), and recorded with Trio X, the Thing, Evan Parker and Mat Maneri, to name a few. The prolific McPhee has amassed hundreds of recording credits as a leader and sideman. In 2025 he released four albums, among them, I'm Just Say'n and Monster.
