Artist Biography
Established in 1999 through a jam session among loosely affiliated musicians from other bands, Fat Freddy’s Drop rose to become one of the most popular artists in New Zealand and one of the country’s most durable musical exports, projecting well beyond the islands into Europe and the UK. Laidback and ultra-eclectic, the band’s style is a grab bag of dance music, from reggae, jazz, and R&B to Polynesian sounds, New Orleans brass-band funk (“The Nod”), and club-pop (“Big BW”)—a catchall they’ve described as “hi-tek soul.” Tireless travelers, the seven-piece—Dallas Tamaira, Toby Laing, Scott Towers, Tehimana Kerr, Iain Gordon, Chris Faiumu, and Joe Lindsay—often refine and reshape their music on the road, while their records—almost always self-released through their own label, The Drop—routinely go platinum in New Zealand. Interviewed in the wake of their breakthrough 2005 debut, Based on a True Story, producer/bandleader DJ Mu chalked up at least part of the band’s success to lack of expectation: “Here in New Zealand we don’t have any rules to play by. We just do whatever.”
