One of a group of superb keyboardists often performing as soloists in the San Francisco Bay area, Frederick Nighthawk also adds to the flock of stage names from both bands and front-line blues performers evoking this particular species of feathered friend; hawks in general are popular in this genre -- as are crows, jaybirds, ravens, and roosters. Like a Frisco beach but hold the seagulls, this Nighthawk's blues foam over with wave upon wave of influence from genres such as country and jazz to which the deeply expressive blues tradition is the sandy home ground. Not a performer to cling solely to a standard or historic repertoire, Nighthawk is indeed known for his original songwriting, featured prominently on releases for labels such as Red Mountain and Orchard. He's had plenty of time to hone this material, sometimes performing as many as 250 annual dates as both a bandleader and soloist. As a writer, Nighthawk continues what some might consider a bird-brained analogy with "Up on a Hawksbill," dips deeply into regional nature studies on compositions such as "The Wild Coast," "Sweet Morning Rain," and "Colors of the Dawn," and delivers in a classic blues style on "Blues for My Baby." ~ Eugene Chadbourne
