An Australian garage rock band, the Ghostwriters is a side project for Hoodoo Gurus bass player Rick Grossman and Midnight Oil drummer Rob Hirst. However, nothing about the group was known in 1991, when they released their first, self-titled album for Virgin Records. Instead, the participants kept their identities secret. In fact, Grossman and Hirst had been friends for over 20 years and had always intended to work together on such a project. Eventually they admitted to their involvement, but it was a full five years before the advent of a second Ghostwriters album. As Grossman told Billboard magazine after its release: ‘I love being in the Gurus, and I know Rob loves being in the Oils, but after you’ve been on the road for six months, it becomes a bit of a grind, and to collaborate with Ghostwriters is refreshing.’ Second Skin was also released in the USA, via a new recording contract with Mercury Records.
