The Goldner String Quartet made a strong claim to preeminence among string quartets in Australia, achieving both considerable longevity and international celebrity. The quartet was founded in 1995 and consists of violinists Dene Olding and Dimity Hall, violist Irina Morozova, and cellist Julian Smiles. The quartet was named for Richard Goldner, the Romanian-Australian founder of the chamber music presenter Musica Viva Australia, under whose auspices the Goldner String Quartet often performed. The quartet made its recording debut in 1998 with a pair of albums devoted to the string quartets of Peter Sculthorpe. The Goldner String Quartet collaborated with pianist Piers Lane on several albums, including 2020's Bartók, Korngold: Piano Quintets and D'Erlanger, Dunhill: Piano Quintets. In 2023, the quartet announced that the 2024 season would be its last.
