After making his name on Brand Nubian’s classic 1990 debut, ONE FOR ALL, Grand Puba broke out with DJ Alamo in tow. His solo debut, REEL TO REEL, dropped in 1992. Largely self-produced and free from the Nation of Islam politics that loomed large in Brand Nubian’s recordings, REEL TO REEL sees Puba at his best--naughty, conceited, and charismatic. In 1995, Puba returned with 2000--a jazzier effort that spawned the Billboard hit “I Like It.” With an effortless, smooth flow (so smooth that he’s known to break into song without missing a beat) and mischievous skirt-chasing persona, Grand Puba is one of New York’s most distinctive MCs.
