Artist Biography
The formation of US rock band the Hellcats came as a direct result of the dissolution of their better-remembered forebears, Starz. Both Michael Lee Smith (vocals) and Richie Ranno (guitar) had been integral members of that group, and formed Hellcats in the early 80s with the assistance of Peter Scance (bass) and Doug Madick (drums), recruited from Prism. Like Starz before them, the group elected to concentrate on a classical American rock style, replete with powerful hooks and adept musicianship. All these qualities were evident on their self-titled 1982 debut, though the release of a follow-up album took several years to negotiate. A bonus track on the less impressive Hellcats Kids was a live version of ‘Tear It Down’, a staple of the Starz live set, which indicated that the five-year break between albums might not have incubated a sufficient number of fresh musical ideas
