Artist Biography
b. 13 September 1931, Washington, Louisiana, USA. Having played music from his early years, Ivory Lee settled in Houston in his teens and began to play in the blues clubs in that city, making his first records as a vocalist in the early 50s. He became drummer with the great slide guitarist Harding ‘Hop’ Wilson, and they made a number of records together, some with Wilson as leader, others - including his best-known song, ‘Rockin’ In The Coconut Top’ - with Semien himself on vocals. In the early 60s, he started his own record label, Ivory Records, whose best-known releases featured some magnificent blues by Wilson. He remained an active musician in Houston, at least on a semi-professional basis, although making little impact outside that city.
