A working-class hero since his debut in the early 1980s, Iwan Fals never fails to put his money where his mouth is. Aside from crafting roof-raising anthems such as “Bongkar”, “Bento” and “Isi Rimba Tak Ada Tempat Berpijak Lagi”, Fals is also heavily involved in social and environmental causes. Typically armed with jangly guitar work and pointed, irreverent criticism of the government and society at large, Fals—a stage name he adopted to poke fun at his frequently out-of-tune singing—is without a doubt one of Indonesia’s most revered and influential icons of all time.
