b. South Vienna, Ohio, USA. Singer-songwriter Queen showed little interest in country music as a youngster and a performing career seemed a long way away when the English Literature graduate was completing a MA in International Relations from the University of Chicago. After spells in London, England and New York, Queen relocated to Australia as a volunteer and it was here that she suddenly decided she wanted to write songs. Despite being barely able to play a musical instrument and never having sung in public before, she teamed up with local songwriter Sam Shinazzi for a number of productive writing sessions. Queen’s demo material came to the attention of local independent label Laughing Outlaw, who signed the artist and commissioned an album before she had even performed a live solo show. Her 2003 debut, Girls Who Cry Need Cake, was a slick collection of country pop material reminiscent of Canadian superstar Jewel.
