b. 29 July 1923, Kensington, London, England. The legendary amplifier manufacturer began his career as a vocalist and became a successful drummer in the 50s. Additionally, he founded his own drum school, teaching up to 65 pupils a week. In 1960, capitalizing on the rock ‘n’ roll craze, he opened his first retail music shop, and it was through this that he started making speaker cabinets in his garage to fulfil requests from his customers. Marshall paid great attention to the sound that guitarists wanted, and tailor-made the units. The first Marshall amplifier (the JTM45) went into production in 1962 and, following his design of a 4x12 speaker cabinet, he was swamped with orders. By 1964, he had opened his first factory since Marshall had already become a considerable name with the beat boom of the early 60s. The Who were early converts; it was Pete Townshend who wanted more power from his amplifier to increase the feedback sound. Jim Marshall responded to his request and produced a 100-watt version. Similarly, when Townshend asked for a cabinet containing eight speakers, this impractical request led to the birth of the famous Marshall stack: two 4x12 speakers on top of each other. The astonishing success over the next decade resulted in the Marshall amplifier becoming the rock world’s most famous piece of equipment, endorsed by Cream and Jimi Hendrix. The original facia shape and design has barely changed in almost 40 years - the dated facia is still part of the charm. In 1984 and 1992, Marshall received the Queen’s Award for Export, with thousands of his units being sold worldwide. The benchmark of most heavy metal groups is a Marshall, which gives a loud, dirty sound from within the famous black and gold box.
